Watches & Warnings

Areal Flood Advisory, Coastal Hazard Statement
Issued: 11:23 PM EDT May. 20, 2018 – National Weather Service

... The urban and small stream flood advisory remains in effect until
115 am EDT for northern Miami-Dade and Broward counties...

At 1122 PM EDT, Doppler radar indicated a cluster of heavy showers
moving onshore over much of Metro Broward County as well as far
northeastern Miami-Dade County. Torrential downpours will lead to
urban flooding in these areas.

Some locations that will experience flooding include...
Fort Lauderdale, Pembroke Pines, Hollywood, Miramar and Coral
Springs.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

Be especially cautious at night when it is harder to recognize the
dangers of flooding.

Excessive runoff from heavy rainfall will cause flooding of canals
and streams, urban areas, highways, streets and underpasses as well
as other drainage areas and low lying spots.

Please report flooding to your local law enforcement agency when you
can do so safely.

... High rip current risk in effect through Monday evening...

The National Weather Service in Miami has issued a high rip
current risk, which is in effect through Monday evening.

* Timing... through Monday evening.

* Impacts... strong rip currents will be hazardous for those in
the surf zone along the Atlantic beaches.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

There is a high risk of rip currents.

Rip currents are powerful channels of water flowing quickly away
from shore, which occur most often at low spots or breaks in The
Sandbar and in the vicinity of structures such as groins, jetties
and piers. Heed the advice of lifeguards, beach patrol flags and
signs.

Swim near a lifeguard. If caught in a rip current, relax and
float. Don't swim against the current. If able, swim in a
direction following the shoreline. If unable to escape, face the
shore and call or wave for help.
