Watches & Warnings

Areal Flood Advisory
Issued: 11:34 AM PDT Mar. 27, 2017 – National Weather Service

The National Weather Service in Reno has extended the

* flood advisory for...
a dam release in...
southern Lyon County in west central Nevada...

* until 330 PM PDT Saturday

* ongoing releases from Bridgeport Reservoir and Topaz Lake have
resulted in increased flows on both the east and West Forks of the
Walker River. These increased releases are a precautionary
measture intended to create additional storage space in the
reservoirs in preparation for high snowmelt runoff later this
Spring.

* Water management adjustments will result in an increase in flow on
the west walke from near Topaz Lake to the confluence. These flow
increases are not anticipated to result in impacts along the west
Walker.

* The flow below Bridgeport Reservoir along the east Walker is
expected to remain fairly constant and may result in minor
flooding along east Walker Road from the strosnider ditch to near
the confluence with the west Walker.

* Farther downstream, combined flows from the east and west Walker
will likely result in minor flooding below Yerington near where
Miller Lane crosses the river.

* Additional minor flooding is possible in mainly rural areas of
south central Lyon couty, but impacts are expected to be minimal
unless flows are increased beyond the current levels. Check with
local officials for possible Road closures or restrictions.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

A flood advisory means river or stream flows are elevated and will
result in some flooding of low lying areas. Water will be swift and
dangerous, especially upstream along the east and West Forks of the
Walker River. Stay away or be swept away.

Wind Advisory
Issued: 2:46 AM PDT Mar. 29, 2017 – National Weather Service

... Wind Advisory remains in effect from 7 am to 8 PM PDT
Thursday...

* timing: winds will increase Thursday morning with the strongest
winds expected with the passage of a strong cold front in the
morning.

* Winds: west 20 to 35 mph with gusts to 55 mph shifting
northwest by early afternoon behind the front.

* Impacts: strong Crosswinds may produce travel restrictions
for high profile vehicles. Choppy conditions can be expected
on Washoe Lake. Areas of turbulence and wind shear will be
possible for those with aviation interests.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

Now is the time to secure loose outdoor items such as patio
furniture and trash cans before winds increase which could blow
these items away. The best thing to do is prepare ahead of time by
making sure you have extra food and water on hand, flashlights
with spare batteries and/or candles in the event of a power
outage.
