.Overview... A National Weather Service storm damage assessment
team has preliminarily reviewed damage from a tornado which occurred across
portions of Norman County Minnesota... resulting from storms during the
evening of August 28th.
Photographic evidence also indicated possibly two shorter-lived
tornadoes occurring across southwestern Polk County. Additional
information concerning these tornadoes will be sent once compiled.
Given the very complex nature of this slow-moving storm, this information
may be updated as additional details become available.

The Norman County tornado developed near the Polk/Norman County
line in northern Spring Creek township. It intermittently traveled
south- southeastward to just northwest of Gary, MN, exhibiting
multiple vortices at times based upon eyewitness reports. Hundreds
of trees were uprooted, snapped, or damaged along the track. A
barn was completely destroyed at one Farmstead with a power pole
snapped. A second uninhabited residence showed damage to portions
of exterior walls in addition to significant tree damage across
In addition to the tornadic winds, numerous trees were downed as a
result of outflow winds, especially east and south of the tornadic
damage path. A roof of an Old House in Gary was removed. Intermittent
tree damage was observed south of Gary.

tornadoes into the following categories.
EF0... weak... ... 65 to 85 mph
EF1... weak... ... 86 to 110 mph
EF2... strong... .111 to 135 mph
EF3... strong... .136 to 165 mph

EF5... violent... >200 mph
