Coastal Hazard Statement
Issued: 3:18 AM EST Jan. 22, 2017 – National Weather Service

... High rip current risk now in effect from 1 PM EST this
afternoon through Tuesday evening...

* timing... this afternoon through Tuesday evening.

* Impacts... strong and dangerous rip currents are forecast which
will be hazardous for those in the surf zone.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

There is a high risk of rip currents.

Rip currents are powerful channels of water flowing quickly away
from shore... which occur most often at low spots or breaks in The
Sandbar and in the vicinity of structures such as groins...
jetties and piers. Heed the advice of lifeguards... beach patrol
flags and signs.

If you become caught in a rip current... Yell for help. Remain
calm... do not exhaust yourself and stay afloat while waiting for
help. If you have to swim out of a rip current... swim parallel to
shore and back toward the beach when possible. Do not attempt to
swim directly against a rip current as you will tire quickly.

Swim near a lifeguard. If caught in a rip current remain calm.
Don't fight the current. Swim in a direction following the
shoreline. If unable to escape, face the shore and call or wave
for help. If tired, float or tread water until out of the rip
current.

... Small Craft Advisory remains in effect until 7 PM EST this
evening...
... Gale Warning in effect from 7 PM this evening to 11 PM EST
Monday...
... Small Craft Advisory now in effect from 11 PM Monday to 7 am
EST Tuesday...

The National Weather Service in Miami has issued a Gale Warning...
which is in effect from 7 PM this evening to 11 PM EST Monday.

* Winds and seas... south southwest winds 20 to 25 knots today,
becoming west southwest 25 to 35 kt with gusts up to 45 kt
tonight. Seas building to 10 to 12 feet in the offshore Atlantic
and 10 to 16 feet in the Gulf by Monday.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

A Gale Warning means winds of 34 to 47 knots are imminent or
occurring. Operating a vessel in gale conditions requires
experience and properly equipped vessels. It is highly
