Flash Flood Watch
Issued: 2:45 AM PST Jan. 20, 2017 – National Weather Service

... Flash Flood Watch remains in effect for the sand and fish
burn areas from 6 am PST this morning through this afternoon...

The Flash Flood Watch continues for

* the sand and fish burn areas in Los Angeles County.

* From 6 am PST this morning through this afternoon

* periods of moderate to heavy rain and possible thunderstorms
will result in a risk of mud and debris flows in and around
these burn areas. Rain rates may reach or briefly exceed a half
inch per hour today... especially in thunderstorms.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

A Flash Flood Watch means that conditions may develop that lead
to flash flooding. Flash flooding is a very dangerous situation.

Southern California residents... in or below the recently burned
areas... especially the fish and sand burn areas... are urged to
take the steps necessary to protect their property. Persons in the
watch area should remain alert and follow directions of emergency
preparedness officials.

Special Statement
Issued: 7:11 AM PST Jan. 20, 2017 – National Weather Service

... Threat of strong thunderstorms with potential for locally
damaging wind gusts... heavy downpours... small hail... and isolated
waterspouts today across southwest California...

A strong upper level jet stream combined with increasing
instability will bring a chance of thunderstorms today across
southwest California... especially this afternoon. The greatest
threat of thunderstorms will be across Ventura and Los Angeles
counties as well as the adjacent coastal waters. Some of these
thunderstorms could be strong... with the main threats being
locally damaging winds that could down trees and power lines as
well as brief heavy downpours causing localized roadway flooding.
In addition... any thunderstorm that develops today will be capable
of producing small hail and dangerous cloud to ground
lightning... including beach areas.

Conditions are also favorable for isolated waterspouts across
the coastal waters... especially south of Ventura. Remember that
waterspouts do have the potential to come ashore as weak tornados
across coastal communities. The threat of strong thunderstorms
is expected to diminish by tonight.
