Great image and caption-- We tend to forget just how rough it was for those early settlers.

Been thinking about that a lot this week, I was selected to carry the flag for the state of Nebraska at the 150th celebration of the Homestead Act at the National Monument in Beatrice. My great great grandparents homesteaded just a few miles east of where I currently live. In letters his son talks about some rather grand exploits of survival. One of the flag carriers I talked with said her parents homesteaded in the Dakotas but got starved out and had to move back east shortly after proving their claim.

About ruralartist
ruralartist My husband gave me a camera for Christmas a few years back and I am still trying to make the best use of it. After working in black and white as a graphite artist for many years, I have finally found a way to capture what's happening in that massive expanse up there. And the light it casts on things down below.
