The Dry Tortugas consist of seven islands, seventy miles west of Key West, Florida. Beginning in 1846, Fort Jefferson was built on Garden Key to protect America’s gateway to the Gulf of Mexico. Because of the weight of 16,000,000 bricks and mortar construction was halted in 1875. During the Civil War the Union Army used the Fort to house derelicts and deserters from the Union Army.

Dr. Samuel Mudd, ("Your name is Mudd") who set John Wilkes Booth's leg, enabling him to temporarily escape arrest was imprisoned at Fort Jefferson along with several other accomplices. He was released after only 4 years (1865-1869) for helping cure some prisoners of yellow fever during an outbreak at the prison.

About Sunnyguy
Sunnyguy I am a retired high school math teacher. My passions in retirement are my grandkids, photography and woodworking. I live in a suburb of Chicago, but love the canyons of Southern Utah and Northern Arizona. A perfect day is hiking, taking photos, and sleeping in my truck or under the stars in the backcountry. I have studied the “wunderful” photos on this site for a long time and your photos have inspired me and helped me to improve my photography.
