You can see the sailors lined up on deck. Each ship gave one short blast on its horn - the horn sound under Inland Navigation Rules for signaling that they intend to leave the other vessel on their port side.

I could also hear the shrill sound of a boatswain's pipe. I'm sure there is a traditional whistle/salute for two Navy vessels when the meet like this.

Growing up on the Eastern Shore and still having some attachment to the area, I've crossed the Bridge Tunnel hundreds of times in my life. (I'm old enough to remember crossing the Chesapeake on the ferries that ran from Little Creek to Kiptopeke Beach on the Eastern Shore.) It's still a thrill to see one (or more) of our Naval vessels. The biggest thrill is seeing a submarine heading out to sea or returning to Norfolk. They are impressive when cruising on the surface.
