Weather Underground midday recap for Tuesday, December 01, 2009.
Wet and wintry weather continued in the Northeast while a low pressure system brought heavy rains to the Gulf states on Tuesday.
A strong low pressure system moved northeastward into the Southern Rockies and Southern Plains from northern Mexico. Flow around this system pulled ample moisture onshore from the Gulf of Mexico, which allowed for heavy rain along the Texas and Louisiana coasts. In Corpus Christi, 0.69 inches of rain has been reported and 0.51 inches in New Orleans, Louisiana. This storm has also brought strong winds with gusts between 30-35 mph. Some light and scattered snow showers have lingered over the high elevations of the Southern Rockies with snowfall totals remaining less than an inch over New Mexico.
To the north, high pressure continued to build over the Mississippi River on Tuesday. This allowed for another day with pleasant weather and mostly sunny skies over New England and the Ohio River Valley. However, the Mid-Atlantic states saw increasingly cloudy skies as the system in the Gulf moved northeastward throughout the day. Light and scattered precipitation persisted over the Northeast, with light snow reported over the eastern shores of the eastern Great Lakes as highs remained in the mid-30s. Most of the Midwest remained near 50. The Northern Plains also saw some wintry weather on Tuesday as a low pressure system in Canada created a front that hovered over the border. Snowfall accumulation in North Dakota and northern Minnesota ranged between 2-4 inches.
Out West, high pressure hovered over the West Coast and brought another warm and sunny day. California saw highs in the 60s and 70s, while the Pacific Northwest reached into the 50s.
Temperatures in the Lower 48 states Tuesday have ranged from a morning low of 1 degrees at Alamosa, Colo. to a midday high of 87 degrees at Boca Raton, Fla.

Hurricane season draws to a close
Posted: 10:23 AM EST on November 30, 2009
It's November 30, and the inconsequential Atlantic hurricane season of 2009 is in the books. Residents all along the Atlantic coast can give thanks for this year's much-needed respite after the pummeling Mother Nature gave last year. The four direct deaths recorded this year represented the lowest death toll since the El Niño hurricane season of 1997, which also had four deaths. This year's season featured only nine named storms, three hurricanes and two major hurr
