Weather Summary

Weather Underground Forecast for Monday, May 12, 2008. Super Typhoon Rammasun is expected to weaken back into a Category 3 typhoon on Monday while curving northeastward well southeast of Japan. The storm will then continue weakening and will end the day as a Category 2 storm. While landfall is not expected, windy conditions and few showers are likely through southern Japan.

An area of moisture will extend across the Philippines towards the Gulf of Tonkin. These areas can expected to experience widespread showers and thunderstorms throughout the day.

Farther to the north, a low pressure system will move into the Yellow Sea from northern China. This feature will carry a cool pool of air with it, but only rain is expected to fall through the northern Yellow Sea. Cool air is also likely in the northern Sea of Japan area.

Tokyo will rise into the upper 50s(F)/mid-10s(C), while Shanghai will see temperatures in the mid-60s(F)/upper 10s(C). Seoul will rise into the mid-60s(F)/upper 10s(C).

For Australia, a large high pressure system will continue sliding through the southeastern portion of the country, keeping much of the country dry. Rotation around this high along with a small low pressure system will provide some showers along the east coast of the country.

Sydney will rise into the mid-60s(F)/upper 10s(C), while Melbourne will see temperatures in the mid-60s(F)/upper 10s(C). Brisbane will rise into the mid-70s(F)/mid-20s(C).

Damage photos I saw from these towns showed buildings swept clean from their foundations, indicative of at least EF-4 damage, and possibly EF-5. Yesterday's deaths brings the 2008 U.S. tornado death toll up to 96--the most tornado fatalities since 1998, when 130 people died. With at le...

Did you know that...

A very powerful F5 tornado moved through Waco, Texas on this date in 1953, killing 114 people. Damage estimates totaled $200 million as the storm destroyed 850 homes and made a 23-mile path through the city.
