Weather Summary

Weather Underground Forecast for Saturday, July 05, 2008.

A low pressure system centered over eastern Russia will produce a front that will extend down through eastern China on Saturday. This front will trigger heavy rain throughout the day on Saturday as it moves eastward across the region. A second system will develop along the front near Beijing in the morning and move to the northeast throughout the day, triggering especially heavy rain across its path. The Koreas and Japan will also see moderate to heavy rain as a result of the front.

Meanwhile, an area of low pressure spinning over central Russia will produce wet conditions for that part of Russia, as well as northern Mongolia throughout the day on Saturday. The rain should be mostly light, but there could be areas of localized moderate to heavy rain. Rainfall over Mongolia should lighten a bit late on Saturday and going into Sunday. High pressure should keep the Middle East hot and dry, while a ridge will keep inland Central Asia clear and warm. Southeast Asia can expect the seasonable monsoon rains on Saturday.

Temperature across the continent will range in the 20s and 30s, while areas in the north will only reach the teens.

A trough over western and central Australia will produce cloudy skies and a few showers over that region on Saturday. Also, a cold front will begin to move across the southwestern part of the continent, bringing light to moderate rain to that part of Australia. Other than a few coastal showers, eastern Australia will remain dry as a result of high pressure.

Dr. Jeff Masters' WunderBlog:

Bertha slowly intensifies, continues west-northwest

Dr. Jeff Masters

Tropical Storm Bertha has slowly intensified overnight, with new heavy thunderstorm activity building up around the center. Sea Surface Temperatures (SSTs) are now slightly below the threshold of 26°C considered beneficial for tropical storms, and this is limiting Bertha's intensification. This morning's 4:01am EDT QuikSCAT pass revealed top winds of about 30 mph, but the satellite was not able to reliably detect Bertha's strongest winds, since QuikSCAT does poorly ...

Weather History:

Did you know that...

On the first Independence Day (July 4, 1776), Thomas Jefferson bought his very first thermometer before signing the Declaration of Independence. Apparently, it was 76 degrees and cloudy. Also, on this date in 1956, a world record was set when Unionville, Maryland received 1.23 inches of rain...in one minute.
