Local VDOT has a thick coating of salt brine on the roads and I saw at least 6 salt plow trucks waiting for this to start. I wonder what people are thinking when they say they didn't know it would get this bad. They were warned... This will get dangerous to all that don't heed the warning! I think we'll get snowed-in.

I was asked by a fellow weather watcher, what kind of weather station and/or webcam to buy... Here was my reply:
Depends on what you want to spend. I chose the Davis Vantage Pro because I wanted the solar and UV sensors... The Vantage Vue is what a lot of people get... Some use a USB camera inside for webcam as a cheaper alternative.
I also use a weatherplug network computer to store and forward information to Wunderground, CWOP, and APRS FTP...

Bring in your dogs, check outdoor spigots, cover well heads, check vehicle antifreeze, and get the firewood! This is going to cause problems we haven't seen in a while... I'm thinking of leaving a drip just so the line from the well doesn't get frozen. A lot of people will have busted pipes and frozen radiators with this chiller. I just wonder if we'll break the "zero" barrier. I remember having a "frost free" spigot that had a hose attached and it backed up into...

Having battery problem with station. Seems like it only works on solar during the day. Will replace battery soon. The super capacitor on the main board is probably bad, making the replaceable battery run out faster. If it is the super cap, I may be down a day or two to fix.

Never fails that when it rains a lot, my rain gauge is stopped up. Today, July 12th, I decided to clean it out. I let all of the water go through the gauge to keep the rain total of the year more accurate. It looks like we had a 1.38 incher this morning, but that was over the last week and probably lost some as I think the birds were using it to bath/drink. The manual gauge on the deck is approaching 5 inches (4.75)since June 29th.
