February 6, 2012: Going to use the lull in the weather (all winter) to bring attention to The Great Central United States Shake Out (preparation) tomorrow, February 7, at 10:15 am CST.
More in the body of the blog.
(This has been a public service announcement, lol--no it's important in light of the fact we've seen 7.1's, 6.8's various 6's, 5.7's all over the world in recent days--a lot of shaking going on. Prayers for all affected.
oh--and a weeee lil 2.4 right here in N. IL, lol)
Cold front comes in tonight, may be flurries. Stronger cold front could come in over the next weekend (that one will be a shocker for us if the models pan out) Pattern change, :) Be safe all ships at sea, and in port, or wherever you may be.
January 25, 2012
Actually the title sums it up pretty good for a week. Maybe some flurries tomorrow, then down to 20 degrees for a high Saturday. Then we watch for the next system to come in (Weds?), but looks like it will be warmer, with just short bursts of cold. I can live with this! Take care all.

Andy who?
Hello WU, An Invest???!! jk(I've been watching it on and off when possible all day)just was a bit busy to post. But wow...The next picture will make this invest impossibility seem totally real. These are motorcycles enjoying a day in N. IL in FEBRUARY!!! at 42 degrees with beautiful sunshine! (note: there are NO snowdrifts in this photo!) Wow.
We had a very nice time today, and I did wear my Green Bay Packers sweatshirt all day (just cause :)
Started the day with 'Souper Bowl' free for community at
the Church. We all made soup and the little boy scouts served it to the people. It was very nice (and a success!) Our little church was filled, and the food was goooood.
Later, the Game? We had so much fun and I love our friends. Made little reubens for the party and they were a hit. Hostess made both New England Clam Chowder and Manhattan Clam Chowder. So cute. Great idea.
And a sandwich tray, Cranberry Horseradish for the Ham, and tons of other goodies everyone brought.
But my favorite little Hors d'oeuvre was the Penguins!!! Bad pic, but they are olives, w/cream cheese bellies, and little carrots and pimento. Ha ha! Too cute!
And the mini-reubens...
Sorry Pats, but congratulations Giants! And, for the rest of us, there's always next year!
Update on the weather because I have some friends who volunteer at the homeless shelter here in N. IL, and maybe next Friday/Sat. could be a bit busy for them with temps dropping drastically? Need to review what I saw earlier. Knew this warm weather could not last.
Hope S. Florida gets some good rain out of 90L. Wish more people would get good rain, but just the fact 90L is there is...well...'Super' freaky!
Night all ships.
Oh yeah!!!

Great links here, along with historic information and University of Illinois studies.

In Illinois, we prepare for weather (well I do, anyway). My important papers, water supply, first aid kit and such are in my tornado shelter area, which is in my basement. Eh...I realized, this would not help in an earthquake of any consequence, like some shaking 5.0 etc...we sit on bedrock, and that basement could be in-accessible.
What to do? Scanned docs are now stored safely, web based and on a little jump drive in a more accessible area. Some supplies w/hardcopies are on the first floor and not in the basement, close to the exit.
Sounds like a lot of preparation for an area of the Country which doesn't get many eq's.
However being 'ready' doesn't just include the disasters we're used to.
Actually, we know, fires, natural gas events, train wrecks...chemical spills, floods, blah, blah, blah can happen, and people are evacuated on a moment's notice.
It was pretty easy to re-think things after that little 2.4 earthshake, and adjust my defenses and make sure we can have things at the ready.
I'm thinking outside the box. Being more prepared, but then tucking those thoughts away, and juslivn.
It wouldn't be pleasant, but we'd survive!
A well pump? Says electric to me. You are actually a lot more vulnerable, der. But I don't have to tell you that. Rockin out here! Going through the vids I posted.
Need to call the P's (because we do so every Monday night) You have to know that there's an invest bringing something to S. FL in Feb. just simply because my Dad is there! Got to keep things interesting, he does!
I haven't been around for a few days, wanted to say "HI" ... glad to see you are OK, and still watching the weather.
Not got time to read back, but how is Molly after her attack from the neighbours brutes?
The Great Central United States Shakeout will begin in five minutes. (I'll duck under the desk to humor myself, lol)

And, it has been the 6th warmest winter in Chicago weather history.
Okay dokay that's my contribution to trivia today. Back to work.
Sandi, thank you for asking, Molly only had a couple of scratches and is doing fine. Both son and neighbor took steps to fix that fence. One good thing is that Son's GF Samantha is related to the Daughter in Law of the people next door, so there was some communication about what happened. I think Samantha is related to pretty much all of McHenry, HUGE family, HUGE, lol.
Ok off to shake and bake!
Oh, whatever! I've no self-respect, anyway! ;-)
We're supposed to get up to an inch of snow tonight, just enough to make things slick! I have a 4wd truck with traction control, but I have to share the road with a bunch of Yahoos going to work! Oh well.....
When did the USGS downgrade the New Madrid quakes to a 7.7 max? I always thought it was about a 9.2!
Hope it's not the hard drive on your laptop; costs a lot of money to replace! :(
Good luck!
How bout this weather? Well, it was nice while it lasted, beautiful sunshine for two days.
Dropping down to 12 degrees tomorrow night (and I felt a drop even today showing houses. Sheesh it got cold fast!)
Lake Effect snow is the bigger story for tomorrow night into Saturday. Lake County, Cook County and Indiana will see up to 7" in some areas and there's an alert for that--up top da blog on that lil map up there :)
NEw, and Ylee and anyone else who popped in while I'm on forced hiatus, nice to see you. Will try to check in and see what's up soon. Animules and yewts seem all good here. Knock on wood.
Going to wings tonight :) May try to beat drunk Bob at the trivia, it's what I live for (lol)
Soooooo, aren't ya glad you stopped into the sleepy Midwest in Feb? Probably lots more news I could comment on, but can't chit chat back and forth, so we'll just call it quiet till I can rant again someday...And I WILL Rant again!!! (someday :)
Til then be safe all ships! Hold down the fort gang and hope you are all well.
Finally have a rainy morning and some time to get caught up with news. I come here and what do I see? Lake effect snow, a damaged dog and computer problems - yikes! Well, it does sound as though things are resolving - dog and computer-wise, anyhow. I guess we'll have to wait to see what the snow does.
We've had a half-inch of rain so far today, and I think it's possible we'll get over an inch. It's not going to make up for the drought, but at least it will beat it back for a while. We need about two feet of rain - not all at once, thank you very much!
Hope your day goes well. Stay warm!
add: I was with Ylee, on the Andy who business. I googled - saw he was a storm chaser.
I can't post pictures from here, for some reason, but I have a new twitter account Juslivn@juslivn1 (twitter.com) and posted photos there. Not sure how to tweet them to Weather Underground? Very new to posting tweets, mostly just read them, so still learning.
Visibility poor, though not much accumulation yet. This should move through McHenry County and head more toward the Lake East of us. Rush hour will be difficult for some, I think. I'm working at home, so no travel plans til later for me.
Thanks for stopping and I will try to get responses to you all later.
I was in charge for 24 hours and no one told me! lol
Sorry the techno Gods are not being kind to you, hope you are up and running soon:)
Ylee, behave! - "I'm in charge!" :-)
Have a wonderful weekend JB - and I hope the Lake effect snow is not too bad if it comes. We have more due tonight, too:(
Not sure about closer to the lake.
Couldn't find you on Twitter. A twitter page link should look like this:
https://twitter.com/#!/varnishgal
When I searched for @Juslivn, I surfaced a guy named Steve who has a bad hangover. ;-)
https://twitter.com/#!/Juslivn
And you can't send photos from Twitter to WU. You can link to another site from Twitter, or vice-versa, but Tweets stay on Twitter. You can post photos and such, attached to a tweet.
Can you find your page and post the actual link here?
It's all new to me, so thank you for the help. The pictures are linked, that's right, I am learning as I go. Need to do the tutorial. You are so smart Shore.
Poor visibility again. Just in time for me to go out to get the car in for reg. maint.
Even staying fairly close to town, my trip was very slow. Windy and very cold. After rush hour, there is melted snow on the pavement. It has dropped to 12 degrees and could already see black ice in some areas. Be careful of black ice and blowing and drifting snow in open areas, imo.
Take care!
I found your twitter page, and clicked the nice little "follow button" - but you've apparently set it up so you have to approve whoever follows you. I'm now officially "pending", so I guess you have to do something to let me into the inner circle. If I'm still pending in June, I'll figure it out. I'm not so fussy - I let whoever shows up follow me, and then I block the porn stars and sellers of utterly absurd how-to-write programs. ;)
Looks like there may be a little nastiness in OK, too. We're just going to have cold - you know, like down to 34. ;) We'll try to survive.
husshhhh. Rant on:
I'm mourning the internet.
I remember just getting addresses on a TRS-80 in a data bank, and thinking it was amazing. The good knowledge the amazement. This week, I
'caught up' on 'the internet' again. When it was a beautiful tool of knowledge before, now those addresses have become something else? they spam old ladies who need to 'weed' through the crud, which we're good at...but it goes so far
Mad at the internet.
Please Excuse Me While I Mourn The Internet.
In IN. Gusts to 60.

Have upgraded Porter County to a Blizzard Warning for the
remainder of the overnight hours. After making numerous calls to
law enforcement and public across northern Porter County realized
that conditions were even more severe than previously thought.
Visbilities have been reported to be less than one car length and
one person was quoted as saying this storm makes last years
blizzard seem like nothing. Combination of excellation of winds
within the convergence band and convectively mixing down wind
gusts am confident that the wind speed and visibility criteria for
a blizzard will be met. Reports of 8-10 inches having fallen so
far with several more hours of intense snow with rates of 2-4
inches per hour expected. Storm totals of a foot and a half still
look like a distinct possibility.
In addition...Burns Harbor just came in with a 52 knots gust at 0521z
underneath the intense les band. Still think there is a possibility
of isolated thunderstorms overnight within the band as well given
the extreme lake induced instability.

We used TRS-80s during my senior year in high school, but none of them had a modem hooked up to them. Was the one you used had the phone modem where you put a phone reciever to this cradle that was hooked up to the computer?
Yup, a lot of trash out there... :(
I have a friend in Prior Lake who is tearing his hair out. He hasn't been able to go Ice Fishing this year, and last summer he bought a brand new rig, and has not been able to try it out!
Take it easy out there today - are you at work or can you stay in and keep warm?
Twitter.... I haven't succumbed, fro the same reason I have deleted my Facebook account. I much prefer Flickr and WU for keeping in touch with friends.... but then, I might just be a Luddite !
I do want to add my two-bits worth for disaster preparedness. Disasters can include a good old-fashioned house fire, so think about a fire-safe to hold important papers and backups of important computer files. Mine is good to 2000F and would withstand having the house collapse on it. I'm sure it could withstand a tornado, as well, and someone would find it intact down the street.
Also, if there's been a severe storm with accompanying power outage when ATMs and credit card swipers won't work, it's good to have a bit of cash on hand. A couple of years ago, there was a long power outage here. The local gas station had a generator to run the pumps, but it was cash only. I had to loan some cash to a neighbor so they could get gas for their generator.
To see all these songs lifted for Whitney Houston as well, is, well just heart wrenching.
Would like to just say, when my children were in the womb, (especially Shannon, the opera singer/accountant), I sang Whitney to them at the top of my lungs. And played the songs loud. "I Believe that Children are Our Future" (The Greatest Love) sung at the top of my lungs, lol!!! Will never forget it: traveling through Michigan, singing. But, I am glad dau heard Whitney's amazing, amazing voice instead of mine, lol. To listen to that range, and professionally try to sing it? You KNOW that was a gift.
And if you are of that generation, we all sang out loud, (really bad) at some point for someone-- I WILL ALWAYS LOVE YOU. RIP Whitney, and Uncle Joe.
I can't post a vid because this computer is blocking copying...can someone please post The Greatest Love? Thank you.
Add: I got it...
12 degrees and juslivn. B safe all ships. Songs are going up tonight for all our angels, no matter what their circumstances, they are free.
Oh, wow, this woman really hit us all with our hearts, in so many ways. So lifting this up for her to be free. No judgement, just beauty.
Thank you WP.
Whitney seemed to be on her way back with that cd. I love Million Dollar Bill from that same release.
Your story about your daughter hearing Whitney Houston songs reminded me of this Christmas song.
Whitney from an early appearance on the Tonight Show:
Do you hear what I hear?
GM. Sunny and warming here. Snow tomorrow night through Tues. morning with maybe 1-2" expected and a tad more south of I-80.
Anyone noticing the date is messed up? Could be just me, but I'm seeing a very strange spelling of February on da blogs: weatheringpoints08:13 AM GMT on Febrero 12, 2012 Weird.
New blog soon, no real topic in mind yet except maybe our plans for our trip to Oklahoma at the end of the month,(we are attending the National Severe Weather Workshop in Norman!!! and visiting dau#3) Plus, we are planning some stops along the way. We've never driven through this part of the Country before, so we're really trying to find places we want to see. Yes, a blog about a trip of 1807 miles (round trip) betcha can't wait, lol.
Over and out...enjoy your Sunday.
Thanks again, Shore. Have a good day all.
