On The Island...Where Nobody Goes....

7F at the moment, and some snow
Posted by: jitterymoose, 5:04 AM GMT en Octubre 28, 2006 +0
Well....we survived our first snowfall in Fairbanks, and it wasn't easy. Still, it's getting better bit by bit. As the boxes get pushed out of the house one by one, and things get unpacked and put away, it's amazing how everyone's stress level begins to fade. Oh, and the house in Copper Center is still for sale if anyone's interested. Pictures this weekend. We're headed to the Creamer's Field Halloween program, and then to the Sled Dog Association to-do at Pioneer Park. I'm still trying to talk the kids into going to "The Tempest" on Sunday afternoon. :-) I'll take along the camera and post shots of Fairbanks. Hope everyone's having a great night. JM

Now in Fairbanks, AK

We're still in the process of getting the house in Copper Center sold, but we're up in Fairbanks, the computer is here, and the blog is now based in Fairbanks. It got up to 68F up here in the sun, and it was cloudless and beautiful this afternoon. I think I even saw Denali for a brief moment toward sunset. High clouds rolling in, looks like our lows will be around freezing. Copper Center is already down below 20F in Silver Spring. Life high on a hill. :-) Hope everyone's having a great night. I'm on the floor hoping the furniture shows up soon! Gotta love moving! Take Care, JM.

Copper Center to Fairbanks

Hi, all. The dish for the satellite blew out of alignment in the big windstorm in Fairbanks, so I'm not moving the blog quite yet. We're all in Fairbanks, now. It got down to 20F the night before last, and it was really cool watching the fog roll in across the valley and climb the ridge toward the house! New pictures and a note from P-Rod once we get the dish back into alignment. Hope everyone is having a great day. JM

Rumor that Kennecott Trestle destroyed in flood
Posted by: jitterymoose, 4:59 AM GMT en Octubre 13, 2006 +0
I'd heard that this is one of the stories on NPR here this evening--that the trestle over National Creek in Kennecott was destroyed in the flooding that's hit SE Alaska with a vegeance. Valdez is still cut off because of damage in Keystone Canyon. No word yet on the four buildings at Kennecott damaged in a previous flood of National Creek--the Hospital, Assay House, National Creek and East Bunkhouses. Will update this when more information comes in. Go back through my pics for photos of the National Creek trestle, or they're google-able. It's just amazing. Chitina is still pretty much cut off because of mud and rock slides near the Tonsina, and I've had reports of a number of people who have had their homes swept away or have lost everything to the flooding. Updates as I get more reliable information. Wind has died down, no rain up in this area, but the mercury dropped like a ROCK here once the sun went down. Clear night--it's already around 20F and falling.

Chinook w/a vengeance, homes lost, flooding....
Posted by: jitterymoose, 7:49 AM GMT en Octubre 12, 2006 +0
We've had a wild 2 1/2 days of weather here. Seward flooded, Valdez flooded, Cordova had over 9" of rain in the past 36 hours (bringing their total to over 13" for the month so far). Winds have been HOWLING both here and in Fairbanks. Terrible mudslides in Keystone Canyon near Valdez and up around MP79 on the Richardson have closed the road in both directions. Apparently, the power was out for 5 hours last night. Luckily, it was a warm night. Fairbanks winds roared up the hillsides around 50mph--rattled the windows and shook the new house. Some folks in Gakona lost their houses to the river yesterday. Weird, weird weather. My son and I drove home from Fairbanks this morning/afternoon, and it was mild and breezy in Fairbanks, the wind was THUNDERING through the pass and around Summit Lake with swirrling snow by noon, and the trees in Copper Center are blowing around like crazy! The temperature's DROPPED, I had to turn up the thermostat. I can hear the windchime out on the porch clang and clang (it's a buoy-bell chime). Sorley is so glad we're home. I still don't know how she's going to take going to Fairbanks. It was snowing there this evening, and it looks like there will be 2+ inches on the hillside by morning. Hope we make it back on Saturday! Hope everyone's having a great and uneventful (weather-wise) night! JM
