The Ark

Fire Weather
Posted by: RobDaHood, 3:46 PM GMT en Abril 12, 2012 +4
Welcome to The Ark

I opened the door earlier this morning to let the dog take a walk and to inspect the garden area. I immediately noticed a strong smell of smoke in the air. The email and photos of Pottery's firefighting episode 2 days ago (to be included in comments section) were fresh in my mind, as was the NWS warning of fire weather this afternoon.

I walked the perimeter trying to determine the source. By the time I completed the loop, the smoke had thinned and I never detected a plume on the horizon, so with the stiff and variable breeze, I guess it was a good ways to the ENE of here.

Not a great way to start the morning. Low humidity, wind, very dry conditions, and lots of dead fuel on the ground from an very dry winter make perfect conditions for the rapid propagation of fires. These conditions are wide-spread this spring.

So...I'm keeping an eye out and I hope all of you are too.

You don't realize how flexible you are until you aren't.
Actually it's worse this morning.
Might have to skip the Margaritas today and eat pain pills instead.

Yeah, the combo would not be good.
It's been about ten years since mine went out.
Am not looking forward to the next time.
Rest well my friend, will check on you later.
Have to get started before the temp goes up.

Thank you.
Not looking forward to getting back in bed.
Had a hard enough time getting out!
Gonna try to find a comfortable place to wait it out and not take the meds unless I have to.

Could really go for a medic jabbing me with some morphine right about now though!

Have a good day, and don't overdo it.

Morning Rob:
I first visited a chiropractor when I had tried everything my Doc could prescribe and I was still hardly able to breath.
I say the chiropractor put me back on my feet. A good masseuse can also help.
Some say Chiro and massage are quakery but I go there when the back goes wonky.

Hey Rob have you tried Lord Pepper' s remedies. Some combo of turmeric and garlic poultice applied to the area. Maybe the back spasm is cue to some imbalance. Perhaps it's in association with Sinko D Mayo syndrome. My Indian friend sleeps on a hard wood floor. Good luck .

Thanks crew!

Skye,
Of course you know I was kidding about the morphine. Now...If I had no choice but to hike 20 klicks up a hill today, it would be different. I have some less drastic meds I can take if needed but avoid them.

ycd,
Well, there is a place up the road a piece where a small asian lady will walk on your back. of course with most of the pain being in my hip area, one wrong step and...well, it's moot anyway as the ride there and back isn't something I want to endure right now. Most of the Chiros nowadays want to just stick electrodes on you and let a machine do the work. I remember when I was around 18 going to one for my neck. He couldn't do a thing because no way I was gonna relax enough for him to twist my neck! Angie does give a pretty good massage.

goofy,
Well, I'm still trying to be optomistic about the possibility of a little Cinco De Mayo romance tonight. I really don't think reeking of garlic and turmeric is going to boost my chances!
:o)
I've been known to sleep on the floor before too.
The dog loves it!

Really though, soaking in an incredibly hot bath this morning helped a lot. I guess I need to move fixing the heater on the jacuzzi higher up on my priority list.

From the couple times I've had this in the past, it will likely fix itself as quickly as it occurred. Just might take a day or two. I know that sitting at my desk all day yesterday didn't help though, so forgive me for not posting much today. Unless I break my own rule about no computers or TV in the bedroom and take the laptop in there.

I'm gonna score a couple shots and take a nap...I think!

Will check in sometime later.

Hmmmm !
Imbalance, eh ?
We trust that you are not referring to Mental Imbalance. Although you may have a point!

Sorry to learn of The Pain, Hood.
But a Chiropractor is pretty good advice. Try it!

(I think)

Unfortunately, these things always seem to occur on the weekends.
(has anyone besides me noticed that?)
No Chiropractors or massage people available.

But really, I'm fine.

Now, as long as I'm here...
a little Cinco De Mayo music!

Really funny video!

Being very careful myself this morning.

Found some new muscles yesterday digging up the hedges.

Let us just say that they are being very "vocal" today. :)

Coffee and asprin is not a real good combination in the morning,
but since I am allergic to Advil,
and I don't like what Acetaminophen does to the liver,
asprin will have to do.

Better add an extra Apple Fritter just in case.

Yep, it's morning...
Although the Sun has not shown it's beady eye as yet. It's raining, don't you know. How peculiar!
Started the day with a rush of activity, getting Lady Pott on the road to deliver a sculpture to somewhere. But first we had to take pictures of it, pack it up, wash the mountain mud off the truck so she could find the door, then receive Instructions that include "find a yard of good soil to plant the things we brought from the bush, and try to dry the stuff that is hanging in the garage that cannot go in the dryer, and make sure that Ancient Person eats a Hearty Breakfast".

On the last item, I have sent Ancient Person with a Priority OneWay Ticket, to Snake's house for that breakfast.
Have fun !

Good Morning!

Just missed you this am RTL.
Last check here was about 0530.
Took a nap from about 1730 to 2000 and then was wide awake until 0600. Feeling much better today. Mainly sore and tender. Best way I can describe yesterday is: you got a large knife stuck in your hip. It hurts and you are constantly aware of it but when you move...someone twists the knife.

Made it through without resorting to meds except the tasty liquid kind. Going to take it very easy today and try to sleep some.

Pottery!
You know Sunday is supposed to be a day of rest...right?
I'm sure anyone visiting the land of the 'Snake would receive copious quantities of delectable rations! Good Call.

Oh, we were posting moon tunes on Grothar's blog last night.
There are still many to add to the list.

Moon was cool last night. Bright in the early evening. Backlighting a pretty good cloud deck in the wee hours. By 0400 was perfectly clear skies and big, beautiful and bright over the lake.

I intend to head to bed early tonight, but thought that I'd leave you a little music that I've been listening to today.

Actually, I started out listening to Romany (Gypsy) music and dance, made my way through some more violin stuff, that I may post later, and ended up with my favorite violinist, someone who I've been listening to for 10-15 years.

I know it isn't the usual fare here, but one of the things I like is introducing people to stuff they may not be familiar with, and reminding folks of things they've forgotten.

Enjoy!

There are several more parts of this particular concert, "Carmen" that you can watch on YouTube.

Hey !! It's 8:30 pm, and you are still laying about with a knife in your hip ????
Sounds pretty Dire, your pain.
Treat it with TLC, and stay prone for as long as possible, my Friend.

I will be around, to ensure that nobody does anything untoward.
And if they try anything, I'll see to it that you are well covered...
And if they don't try anything, well, it must be Sunday night or something!

Good Night to you and you-know-who too !
Just done checking the perimeter, storing the cargo belowdecks, and stuff and whatnot.
Some nasty weather appears to be approaching from the S/W.
We did not see the Sun at all today. Gloomy, drippy, moist one.
But in spite of that, it was a Good One!

Good Morning Arkonots!

I am feeling much better myself today, just needed to rest the sore muscles.

Hey Pottery, had great fun with the Ancient Person, she is a real hoot!

Bought her a ticket home to you of course, first class this time.
She said you sent her "coach" over here, shame on you.

By the way, gave her the receipe for Apple Fritters and told her you would make them for her EVERY DAY!

No, its ok, you don't have to thank me. :)

Have fun!!!

Wow, that does sound good!

Speaking of a flash from the past, Howard Johnson's used to sell Maple Walnut ice cream.
Haven't been able to find it anywhere for the last 20 years. Publix is now selling it.

I have some in the freezer right now. I could try putting some on my Apple Fritters this morning for breakfast.

Will let you know how it turns out. :)

Good Morning.
Didn't realize you two where here yet.

Angie gets that maple walnut ice cream once in a while.

428
Could be. I used to have a mini-moog. May actually be a sample though. The white violin is electric. She has performed with another electric decorated with stars and stripes. She also plays a 1761 Guadagnini.

Now here is the update.
Only a faint twinge now and then from the compressed nerve. Lower back and butt sore from muscles being locked tight for two days. After Angie leaves for work I'll take another hot bath and that should take care of it. Have too much to do to be laying around watching TV all day.

Yeah, I know the feeling, the rest is good though.
I figured out what I did to mine. The four hedges I dug up were surrounded by two sprinkler water lines so I had to be carefull with the shovel so I wouldn't cut the lines. The hedges have been in there for four years so the roots went down to China and under the driveway and front porch.

I had to pull all of them near the end to get them out, that's how I "pulled" the back muscles. :(

Dumb Snake, Dumb.

All that sort of work is done now, the mulch is finished, all that's left now is to use the electric hedge clippers to prune the rest of the hedges and plants around the house so they don't whack me as I go around the house with the lawn tractor.

The worse that can happen with that job is the bees don't seem to like me whacking the bushes with the trimmer while they are in the bushes.

There is always something isn't there?

"The Word of the Day"

I began with "Abecedarian", then "Baklava and Balaclava", then "Cacophemism", and the last word I discussed was "Dactylogram". As you are aware, our dactylograms are on file in some little obscure office in the basement of some little obscure building in DC at all times.

Well, there it is then.

Today's word is Ectomorph, Endomorph, and Mesomorph.
Yes, I am aware that there are three words.
Yes, I am aware that mesomorph does not begin with the letter "E".
It is however a member of the same "family" of words and therefore has to be included in any discussion of ectomorph and endomorph.

These three words are Psychology's contribution to the English language. The terms simply mean tall thin person, short fat person, and middle-sized person, respectively, but they look much more impressive than those more old-fashioned terms in a thesis on behaviorism, or in an appallingly expensive textbook.

They are, moreover, useful for insulting or alarming the ignorant: "Sir, you are a miserable mesomorph". Or, "One more remark like that my good man, and I shall see to it that the world knows of your ectomorphic tendencies".

I know that you will be waiting with baited breath for me to choose an appropriate "F" word.

Fear not, it will not be facinorous in any way. :)

PS:

Props for this discussion of words goes to Swampy.
It was he who gave me "The Superior Person's Book of Words".
Thanks Swampy, the book is a hoot! :)

She arrived back here, fed and watered, and mumbling about Snakes and Sugared Bears, Fritters and Fish Fingers.
Last night she demanded 2 Gin&Tonics, as there were none at your house. Never mind. She has forgotten all that anyway!

Have to go to the city to have my eyes checked out.
I think it's time for new lenses in the reading glasses.
No doubt they will try to sell me new frames with some Fashionable Brand Name for mucho Dinero. But I will hold fast and insist that the ones I have will be fine with new lenses.
One has to fight back against all this Commercial Abuse.

It did not rain last night, surprisingly! And this morning is a milky dawn that promises Heat and Humidity.

Good to hear that the assorted Pains, Aches and General Old Age are subsiding around here. I won't bother you with a list of mine, seeing as how they are Many, Varied and Persistent.....

Hmmm, I think I could use the help of a "real" weather person.

From the radar it would appear to me that Macon is in for a one/two punch.

Or, that Macon is about to be caught in a Pincer Movement by the system to the SSE and the System to the NW.

Any advice on either of these two possibilities would be appreaciated. :)

I have been considering this question.
And I think I'll go with the lenses.
This after I tried to drive a nail with a big Monitor.
Still smote my finger a painful blow and missed the nail completely.
And got bitten on the arm.
Now, apart from the lenses, I will have to purchase a Large Monitor.
This one has not survived.
I'll call the Reptile house at the Zoo. Maybe they have one....

Might get some rain after all!

Well, I did get dripped on just slightly, but as far as the rain that was in the forecast for today, and the special weather statement that was issued:

Missed again!

I would be very pleased to send you some of this dampness that has been around here for several weeks. Or maybe it's months.
I can't remember. My brain is becoming a Fungoid of Illustrious Proportions. Most alarming. And it's causing strange dreams.
For instance, last night I.... oh. no. I can't!

Talking of which, dinner was a very nice pie, purchased by Lady Pott today, hand made by some friend or the other, and consisting of Steak and Mushrooms (fungus, you know). Along with some brown rice and a salad. Good!

Perhaps tomorrow the sun will shine.
Then I will have no excuse for whatever it was I said I would do in Feb. but couldn't because of the rain.
I LOVE the rain.
