New outlook issued August 11th 2012.
Thunderstorm activity has picked up dramatically in the last few weeks, so far 2012 is now the 3rd most active in my 7 year record with 49 storms as of Aug 24th,
Thunderstorms per 100km2 forecast:
Overall activity will be above normal, with an unusually active end of the season extending into the fall.
40-55 storms with numbers as high as 80 in the foothills. Some areas could see activity as low as 5 storms/100km2
May: No storms reported(Wetaskiwin area)
June: 12 storms, 3 strong, 3 moderate, 6 weak slightly exceeding the forecast, much more active in extreme southern Alberta
July: 17 storms, 3 severe, 5 strong, 3 mod, and 6 weak. Forecast of 10-15 storms exceeded
August: Hot and Humid: 19 storms so far, 10-20 storms forecast
September: Warm and humid. 2-5 storms forecast.
