Torrential rain causes widespread flooding in Florida panhandle
Posted by: Angela Fritz, 2:25 AM GMT en Junio 10, 2012 +36
Torrential rainfall led to widespread flooding along the northern Gulf Coast on Saturday, and Pensacola came about 2 inches shy of matching its all-time rainfall record for a calendar day: 15.29 inches. On Saturday, Pensacola airport received 13.13 inches of rain. The previous record was set on October 5, 1934, as Tropical Storm 9 of that year was making landfall. The record for any 24 hour period is 17.1 inches, spanning Octover 4-5 in 1934, according to Wunderground weather historian Christopher C. Burt.

A state of emergency was declared for Florida's Escambia County. According to the AP:

Emergency shelters were opened at a few local schools for people who were urged to evacuate from low-lying areas, the newspaper reported. Thousands were without power. Neighboring Santa Rosa County had about 40 homes flooded.

Streets were flooded throughout Mobile, Ala., which got 5.79 inches of rain. County authorities warned residents to stay off the roads until the waters receded and workers could look for damage and downed utilities.

The rain has since ended for now in the Gulf states, but images and video of the aftermath are still pouring in. The area is expected to receive more rain on Sunday, which could last until the middle of next week, as thunderstorms fire along a stationary front which is draped across the coastal states.

Figure 1. Widespread, heavy rain washes onto the Gulf shores on Saturday, enhanced by a lingering stationary front that's draped across the region. The heaviest rain fell in Pensacola, Florida, which came 2 inches shy of breaking its all-time calendar day rainfall record.

Video: Downtown Pensacola still flooded this evening after the rain had stop. The city's airport received 13.13 inches of rain since midnight.

If this does transition to an invest off the east coast, what is the most likely direction it would go?

Wow the rain situation in the panhandle continues to get worse about a 12 inches and more by the time this is done. In fact I believe the Mayor of Pensacola declared a state of emergency. It just goes to show you unpredictable nature is.

FLPanhandle,
that pic of Navarro with the waves is really wonderful.

I know it is politically incorrect at the moment to wish for rain, and I'm sure sorry for the troubles that the folks in Pensacola are having, but sheeting rain like we got sits on the surface and causes all sorts of chaos. Like someone up there just turns on a faucet and suddenly you can't see across the street.

That does not mean that we are out of the woods as far as the drought goes. Our aquifer is still very low, and I'm hoping that this season will continue to bring us rain. If we are lucky it will be spread around a bit, so no one has to get flooded out. We're just a few hours east and still pretty dry.

I'm sure the Pensacola folks must have mixed feelings. Everyone wants the water so bad, but no one wants a state of emergency or to get their car washed by immersion! That's what makes the shot of the guy on his pool float so great. I can almost hear him thinking, 'Oh well, what the....'

On on Positive note, Florida is flat so atleast there isnt raging water barreling through town, like the CT Valley towns last year, but rather stagnent water.

Considering the comments people have made about those who choose not to stay home:

with floods in the GA area it seems that those who drive at all are the busy type who think they "have" to go somewhere, and those who drive into the water are either the stupid, those who think their vehicle is "tough enough", but most often it seems to be those who have an urgent reason to get where they are going.

When GA had it floods, i can particularly remember 2 vehicle related flood deaths.
One was a mom who had left her 4 children at home a home and had attempted to cross a creek flowing a road, and another was a businessman whose company had not cancelled an important meeting.
The final common situation is when people try to estimate the depth of the water based on what they remember, this almost always leads to underestimation.
And many people just dont understand that 6 in of water is very dangerous, and attempt to cross "shallow waters"

A slow moving hurricane or even a slow moving TS would be devastating to the FL Panhandle if it hit right now... Luckily nothing tropical is on the way for a while but it still looks like it'll be staying wet down there

That's true. But also so much sandy ground that the water just runs through. it won't take that long to dry out, as bad as it looks now.

No. it would be much better if that front moved over a bit, took the pressure OFF Pensacola and let the rest of us soak up some.

You just CANNOT satisfy Floridians, now can you? It's either, OMG, we're so dry that the sun is setting the ground on fire, or that we're in severe drought conditions, blah, blah, blah. Or, OMG, make it stop already, we're drowning; we've already had over a foot of rain fall over our county and it's still coming down. Close the faucet already! It's resulting catastrophic flooding, blah, blah.....

PEOPLE, in life you CANNOT have your cake and eat it too. And this even applies to the weather, believe it or not.

Enough with this HYPOCRISY!!!!!!!!

If that low can survive over land it should have no problems really when it comes off of the coast and develop.it might be sub-tropical though. But due to that gulf stream I'm thinking tropical in nature.
