Powerful Nor'easter poised to hammer Eastern U.S.
Posted by: Dr. Jeff Masters, 4:23 PM GMT en Diciembre 18, 2009 +3
An intense and very wet Nor'easter is gathering strength over the Gulf of Mexico, and stands poised to generate heavy snow and possible blizzard conditions tonight through Saturday from the Smoky Mountains to New England, including the major cities of Washington D.C., Philadelphia, and New York City. The storm has already dumped up to three inches of snow in western North Carolina, and a foot or more of snow is likely over the mountains of North Carolina, Virginia, and Tennessee. Flooding from the storms' heavy rains will be a problem in Mississippi and Alabama, where up to six inches have fallen (Figure 1).

Figure 1. Total rainfall from the Dec 18 - 19 Nor'easter, as estimated by Birmingham, Alabama radar.

Tornadoes threaten Florida
Severe thunderstorms capable of generating tornadoes have developed along the storm's cold front, which is advancing over Florida today. The Storm Prediction Center has placed most of Florida in its "Slight Risk" area for severe weather, and tornado warnings have already been issued for Homestead and Naples this morning, though no confirmed tornadoes have resulted from the warnings thus far. The threat of tornadoes will continue through mid-afternoon over Florida, then gradually decrease late this afternoon as the low-level winds align with the upper-level winds, creating less of the change of wind direction with height typically needed to create tornadoes.

You can track today's storm with our interactive tornado map and severe weather map.

Copenhagen
Our Climate Change expert, Dr. Ricky Rood, has left Copenhagen's COP15 climate change talks to resume his slightly saner life as a professor at the University of Michigan. His latest post, called The Party is Over: Copenhagen Devolved presents a fascinating look at what it was like to be at the conference, and what was (and was not) accomplished there. I'll be posting my own summary of the legacy of the Copenhagen talks early next week.

Doing well. To tell you the truth, I didn't think we will see "The Big One" until later in the winter(it hasn't even officialy started yet)I certainly never thought it would happen in December. FYI some forecasters are hinting we may see a fresh blanket of snow on the ground Christmas morning but we have to get through this one first before we worry about anything else.

yea, lets get through this one first...but i do know what your talking about...its just gonna depend on how much cold air sticks around this week to determine if it will be a rainy or snowy christmas eve...

The snow is mixing with a little sleet. Should be this way overnight and by morning we will wake up to heavy snow.

yea...here its almost all snow...had a few sleet pellets here and there in the start...no liquid...all frozen....which wont hurt storm totals...most of the area all the way down to the tidewater depends on the distance from the coast the low is....

John Bernier for 8News says he's got a gut feeling it's going to be a foot of snow. His gut forecasting is usually accurate. Yesterday he put us in the 10-15" area.

tf....john is one of my dads good friends...my dad is the chief engineer there at the station...i know john well and talk to him from time to time when i stop by the station...hes usually pretty good...he has missed a few times...but im looking at atmosheric conditions and the radar...and we have a solid band thats getting stronger and stronger from west of phowatan through chesterfield and richmond all the way over to west point...if it continues to get stronger and filling in to the south...we may get much more tonight that originally forecast...i mean look at the wu forecast for chester...

Tonight
Snow this evening...then snow and sleet after midnight. Snow and sleet accumulation of 2 to 4 inches.

if it gets heavy in the next few hours....were gonna get more than 2-4 inches overnight...

Yeah, this system has plenty of subtropical moisture mixed in. It has nearly everything a strong nor'easter would need, the biggest question is placement in relation to the coast.

That's not a lot by our standards, but I do realise it's supposed to snow close to 20 inches (50 cm) at your location. "A lot" by the standards here (S. Ontario) would be more than 25 cm (10 in).

you are correct sir...how close to the coast has my snowfall range from 3-6 inches to 12-16 inches...id prefer the smaller amount only because people in this area tend to lose brain function when it comes to snow...and Virginia, esp. central and eastern don't have the equipment to handle large amounts...anything over 4-6 and back roads aren't touched for days...

Oh, Gov. Tim Kaine has declared one for VA, too, but maybe someone already mentioned that -- just hopped back on.
