Friday Near Term Forecast 1030am...
This morning easterly winds have pushed a marine layer onshore accompanied by low clouds and fog. This will push out by noon, by still this morning will keep a hold on temperatures in the 60s. Meanwhile in western Pennsylvania as 1030am the sun is out shining with dewpoints in the 70s. CAPE values already in western Pennsylvania at an impressive 3000 j/kg according to latest soundings. There is a strong mid level CAP today. But with a little orographic lift some pulse thunderstorms cannot be ruled out. No lifting mechanisms will also be a problem for convection to form. High temperatures will approach 90degrees in almost all areas for the first time this year. Excessive heat watches and warnings are out for Saturday and Sunday where high temperatures will push mid 90s and heat indices over 100. Plan your outdoor plans accordingly this weekend. Have a great Friday!!!
still waiting for the sun to break through.
my potatoes are getting blossoms. cucumbers are doing well. it was touch and go last week. radishes are ready to be picked finally. weeds made a nice comeback before the claw and hand took over yesterday.
for some reason my sugar snaps didn't come up. 3 out of 60 came up. hopefully, zuchini will get blossoms soon.
Next year put your sugar snap seeds in the ground in late March. When the soil is this warm they're more prone to rot and as the seed gets soft there's usually some kind of critter alive to eat them.
They'll survive temperatures down to 15-20 degrees in the early spring so you won't really have to worry about killing them. You're far enough south where if you did that you'd start to harvest them around this time of year.
You'll get much higher germination rates and you'll also get a 3-4 week head start on the weeds.
any suggestions on preparing a spot in my garden for the peas for that time of year?
jthal57- My tomato plants have blossoms, by my neigbor's one tomato has already 3 tomatoes growing on it. One of them is quite large.
sullivanweather- Thanks. I will have to look into planting them early next year.
no tomatoes yet. blossoms on my cherry, but usually this time of the year you may get tomatoes, but it takes forever for them to turn.
actually have a couple of peppers on a plant.
Temps around here range 86 to 89 F.

Short Term Forecast
Well this is my last update before my trip. I will be gone all of next week. Feel free to post comments in the blog and I will try to get back to you when I return. I would also appreciate some observations of the type of weather that occurs each day, so I have an idea of the weather pattern that occurs next week. As for severe weather. I looked ahead and there could be a severe weather outbreak Tuesday as a cold front moves through the region. Beware of that and stay tuned to the NWS. For today the heat will increase and already many areas are at 90degrees with dewpoints in the 70s. Even as I posted below an 80degree dewpoint cannot be ruled out. Also the CAP is not as strong today and it shows weakening across the northwest. Pulse thunderstorms cannot be ruled out anywhere across the state as CAPEs go over 3500 j/kg. If pulse thunderstorms do form that are capable of becoming of severe with strong downdrafts. For tonight radiation fog could be a problem again, but most likely not as dense as it was this morning. The heat continues for early this week. Then midweek it cools off, only leading to another return of hot weather by next weekend. Have a wonderful week!!! I will be here the rest of today. But tomorrow morning I am off!
heat index 97.3 with a high of 101.8
breeze in the single digits out of WSW
for those interested the wind chill is 92.7
been out in the yard doing all kinds of things all day. my face is burning up and it is time to hit the pool.
just to let you know i fertilized my lawn today. i believe we are in for some drought conditions for a bit. if i had done it sooner we might not have such high precip for the year and my gardens wouldn't be taking off with the sun.

Only one suggestion. Get them in the ground, man! LOL
Peas are legumes and can grow in just about anything.
You don't really even need to let the soil sit after its turned. If the ground thaws and you can get a shovel or pitchfork into it is when you should plant them.
Just plant them in a row and put in a small support for the seedlings. After 4-5 weeks they should be big enough for a trellis or tomato cages.
For Tuesday a cold front will move in to provide some temporary relief, but it appears as if warmth may return by the weekend. Also severe weather could be a threat, but timing is still under question. Have a wonderful upcoming week!
PS... I am hoping to get some pictures of cloud formations during the boring plane ride. If any are decent I will be sure to post them.
on my way home i say wet roads and leaves on the ground and was amazed.
that was one strong gust. a chair was actually blown in the pool.

I know the garden has enjoyed the last few days of hot sun. Some have really taken off.
Thanks for stopping by my blog this weekend! You're probably dreaming of a blizzard with that steamy weather you're having. I wouldn't be surprised if Philly and NYC make it to 100 today. Nice and cool out here...43 in Denver this morning and below freezing in a lot of mountain areas!! Stay cool and have a great week :-)
We had a high of 97 today, and a heat index high of 104 in Easton today.
Im watching the sea breeze coming off of long island sound to see if any storms pop.
I had decent hail here yesterday. About quarter size, in two different storms. I posted video on Sullys site.
ChrisCone- I was wondering where your great forecast discussions were? But I understand as this is only weather blogging and all other things such as finances are much more important! I think I will stick with communicating on the blogs here at weatherunderground, but a much appreciated thank you for the offer. As for your weather locals, lol, well the need to stop looking at the GFS model, and start making some accurate forecasts. Severe weather does look possible in Connecticut, get some pictures if anything heads your way.
cchamp6- Wow, 99degrees and quarter inch hail. Sounds like some wild weather up your way.
jthal57- Any thunderstorms up your way this week. I saw to your north in the poconos of some severe weather reports.
DenverMark- O how I wish of a July blizzard, lol. Thanks for stopping by.
WeatherBobNut- Yes this is sure some hot weather along the east coast. Hope to talk to you soon when I return.
TheRasberryPatch- 43mph gust is still pretty significant. Can you image hurricane force winds, wow! Watch out for severe weather today!
Well thanks again for the observations and comments. I may post quickly again sometime later this week. Stay tuned to your local news and national weather service today as severe weather looks widespread. Have a wonderful week!!!
Hope you are enjoying your Florida trip. How nice of them to have some storm clouds around to welcome you. Looking forward to seeing the pictures.
It is another 101 degree day in this neck of the woods. There was a storm that popped up in Currituck county earlier and it just spun around itself. I've seen similar radar stories. Spotty stuff popping up here and there. We're hoping for a cool down as this is day 4 of the extreme heat.
monday 93.5 and tuesday of 92.2
with a heat index of tuesday of 102.1
not much rain to speak of so far. we had a wind gust of 26 mph @ 650pm
the barometer is rising rapidly.
something i didn't realize at least from my observations for this month is that the barometer rarely gets abover 30.00"
high of 83.8
with low humidity.
this is what i expect out of early June.
We had a couple of storms that moved through northern Northmapton County late last week/weekend. Tuesday night's storms moved through central Lehigh County and western/central Northampton County with some hail and severe storms. Here in east central Northampton County we saw lots of lighting, wind, about .40" rain, but not a lot in the way of damage. Most of the storms appeared to be 1-5 miles from me.
Most everything in the garden is growing like there's no tomorrow. And, yes, I've started to water. Weatherwise though, it's been pretty dull.
sunny and blue skies
high of 89
low of 61
and low humidity during the day.
PS: Thankyou for all of the very helpful daily observations!
On and off rain here most of the day. The temp never rose above 69°. We got .75" of rain from this last round of storms. That gives me a total of 2" for the month so far.
With the heat we've been getting, the garden plants have really taken off. And so have the weeds. With the predicted low temps for the coming week, I'm planning on doing a lot of weeding and starting to mulch everything down for the summer.
