Will this Winter mirror last year? It won't bother me one bit if it does. Last Winter started typical enough, and so far Bangor has been on the same path. As with last Winter, we have started out a little above average on snowfall. Last year, 14 inches of snow fell January 18-20th, and that was the end of the heavy stuff. A record rainfall of 1.71" and 51 degrees melted most of the snow on January 25. Winter was effectively over after that. A few stray inches of snow fell in late January, followed by a short cold snap the first week of February. Then the anomolies started. From February 8 to March 25, Bangor had 46 consecutive days of above average temps. 29 of those days were double digits above average. February was the warmest on record for Bangor, and the 3rd least snowiest at 2.2". March was the 2nd warmest on record, and tied for the least snowiest at 0.9". The golf course had never opened in March before. Last year they opened on the last official day of Winter. Yes I would gladly take a repeat of last Winter...

It looks like Mother Nature painted the North sides of all my trees...
I wonder why it is that Mother Nature's wind would clear a spot under the bird feeder, while blowing a 4 to 6 foot drift along the West side of my house, effectively burying my 3 steps down off the back deck...or could it be that I placed the bird feeder in a spot that has been clear of snow several times in past Winters?
On the day after the blizzard, I managed to break through the drift so that I can use the steps off my back deck. Since then, I have chopped the drift into blocks and made a "snow wall" out from each side of the bottom of the steps to hold my artificial turf in place

Love that shot of the maples against those dark clouds. Very nice, indeed!
I see you had a last gasp of warm weather Friday and Saturday.
We've been a bit chilly in the a.m.; just enough that a sweater or light jacket feels good. We've been warming up to the 60's or even up to 70 or 71 or so by late afternoon.
It won't last long, though, so I'm enjoying it while I can. Our version of cold weather will arrive all too soon.
I could swear I saw one thumbing his nose at me the other day.
But anyway, here is what you do...
Step one- locate the entrance point (or points)
Step two- put out a cornucopia of nuts and other goodies in the yard to get them out of your house
Step three- cover those entry points while they are outside having a feast...
LOL hope this helps :-)
I'll even be nice and put out some nuts for the squirrels! LOL

"We hear the beating of wings over Bethlehem and a light that is not of the sun or of the stars shines in the midnight sky. Let the beauty of the story take away all narrowness, all thought of formal creeds. Let it be remembered as a story that has happened again and again, to men of many different races, that has been expressed through many religions, that has been called by many different names. Time and space and language lay no limitations upon human brotherhood."
~New York Times, 25 December 1937, quoted in Quotations for Special Occasions by Maud van Buren, 1938, published by The H.W. Wilson Company, New York
You shovel snow like my dad used to. And you're right - doing it multiple times is the trick, especially if it's heavy. The problem always was getting plowed back in by the city, but there wasn't much to do about that.
I don't remember ever losing power in an Iowa blizzard. It was the ice storms that took down the power lines, and that was pretty rare for us. The kinfolk in Missouri and Oklahoma always were cooking in their fireplaces, though. ;)
We did have some magnificent storms. I wish I had the pic of the blizzard that put a drift all the way to the top of my grandparents' house - there was a tunnel from the back door, through the drift, to the road. I don't have a clue how they did it!
It'll be interesting to see how things play out for you. I know you're competent, but be careful.
I'm always careful ha-ha. I can always just retreat back into the house and sit in front of the fireplace, but I like to keep ahead of it. The Ice Storm of 1998 was the worst Winter storm I have ever had to deal with, this will be peanuts compared to that...
I plan to get back outside in about 20 minutes so I won't be posting for a while. This is break time LOL. The coffee is on...
Looks like a regular snow day to me, 4-6 inches out there so far and snowing lightly w/ rain mixed in at times. Over hyped that's for sure. I was expecting and hoping to be buried by the time I got up. What a bummer.
It didn't work well on a couple of light snowfalls last week -- I used a conventional wide blade plastic push-type shovel for that. That may have been simply a matter of learning how to use it; the metal blade gets caught easily in cracks and rough spots, and it's important to keep the weight a bit toward the rear so the blade doesn't bind. However, it could be that with very light snow there simply isn't enough weight to push the shovel into the ground, so it rides up on top of the snow. In any event, it did much better than I expected in the deep, compacted powder of today's storm.
Being a La Nina year, I wouldn't be surprised if we've already had the majority of this winter's snowfall. It will be interesting to see how it performs in wet snow.
May there always be work for your hands to do.
May your purse always hold a coin or two.
May the sun always shine upon your window pane.
May a rainbow be certain to follow each rain.
May the hand of a friend always be near to you and
May God fill your heart with gladness to cheer you.
Happy New Year 2011, Walker!
Happy New Year.. Hope 2011 is grand for you
