Weather Underground Launches Road Trip Planner
Combining Weather Forecasts and Driving Directions for Easier Holiday Travel
SAN FRANCISCO, CA (November 19, 2009) – Car trips have just gotten easier. Weather Underground, the Internet’s first weather provider with 10.3 million monthly U.S. unique visitors, announced today the launch of a new service integrating weather conditions and driving directions. The ultimate travel tool, Road Trip Planner debuts November 19, just in time for holiday travel.
Weather Underground’s Road Trip Planner provides point-by-point driving directions for journeys within the continental U.S., as well as weather forecasts every five kilometers along the route. Weather forecasts update dynamically depending on the departure date and time specified for the trip itinerary and can go as far out as seven days. This unique combination of directional information and weather data is displayed on Weather Underground’s interactive weather map.
Unlike other directional services, the Road Trip Planner points out detailed weather events that could affect driving and road conditions including: below freezing temperatures, snow storms, rain and hail—all of which indicate unfavorable and potentially dangerous driving conditions. The Road Trip Planner allows drivers to make appropriate preparations for the smoothest and safest drive possible.
“The Road Trip Planner is designed to make drivers journeys, safer, smarter and easier,” said Weather Underground President, Alan Steremberg. “We’re launching just before Thanksgiving, which is generally the highest road travel day of the year, so that more people will be better prepared for safe journeys.”
For longer journeys, Weather Underground’s new Road Trip Planner is able to accommodate up to four different legs of a traveler’s road trip. Drivers who want their directions complete with updated weather conditions mapped along the way should log onto http://www.wunderground.com/roadtrip/ immediately to begin planning their trip.
