    Weather Summary

    Shaun Tanner
Weather Underground midday recap for Friday, July 04, 2008.

A front lingered across the Mid-Atlantic states down to the Southern Plains on Friday. In the Northeast, the front triggered a line of showers and thunderstorms across the Mid-Atlantic states. No severe storms were reported across the region, but the storms still produced heavy rain and strong winds. New flood advisories were issued across the Ohio Valley in response to the showers. New England remained mostly clear due to high pressure that began to build in behind the front. Temperatures were mild on Friday, and only reached the 70s.

The front also kicked up a small line of showers and storms across the Southeast on Friday. A few of these storms turned severe, and brought strong winds, rain, and hail to the area. Blythewood, South Carolina reported penny sized hail during one of the storms. Also, onshore flow from a high pressure produced afternoon thunderstorms across the Gulf, a couple of which became severe. Temperatures across the Southeast rose to the 80s and 90s.

In the Southern Plains, Texas and Oklahoma saw some showers and storms due to the front. None of the storms were severe, but they did produce enough rain to prompt some flood advisories across the two states. The rest of the Plains saw conditions that ranged from clear to partly cloudy skies, and temperatures across the middle of the state ranged from the 90s in the Southern Plains to the 70s farther north.

The Northwest saw cloudy skies as a trough began to make its way into the area on Friday. Temperatures in the region were in the 60s and 70s, with 80s and 90s farther inland.

The Southwest was mostly hot and dry, except for some thunderstorms across the Four Corners. Temperatures were mostly in the 90s and 100s, with the desert areas reaching 110.

Temperatures in the Lower 48 states Friday have ranged from a morning low of 37 degrees at Truckee-Tahoe, Calif to a midday high of 100 degrees at Henderson, Nev.

    Dr. Jeff Masters' WunderBlog:

    Bertha slowly intensifies, continues west-northwest

    Dr. Jeff Masters

Tropical Storm Bertha has slowly intensified overnight, with new heavy thunderstorm activity building up around the center. Sea Surface Temperatures (SSTs) are now slightly below the threshold of 26°C considered beneficial for tropical storms, and this is limiting Bertha's intensification. This morning's 4:01am EDT QuikSCAT pass revealed top winds of about 30 mph, but the satellite was not able to reliably detect Bertha's strongest winds, since QuikSCAT does poorly ...

    Weather History:

    Did you know that...

On the first Independence Day (July 4, 1776), Thomas Jefferson bought his very first thermometer before signing the Declaration of Independence. Apparently, it was 76 degrees and cloudy. Also, on this date in 1956, a world record was set when Unionville, Maryland received 1.23 inches of rain...in one minute.
