... Excessive heat warning now in effect until 9 PM PDT Saturday
for the Willamette Valley... Columbia River gorge... and Upper Hood
River Valley...


The excessive heat warning is now in effect until 9 PM PDT
Saturday.

* Timing: through Saturday evening.

* High temperatures: 95 to 100 degrees. Hottest in the central
and southern Willamette Valley and central Columbia River gorge.

* Low temperatures: 60 to 65 degrees.

* Duration: Saturday should be the last very hot day. Temperatures
will gradually cool each day with daytime temperatures below 90
degrees by Tuesday.

* Locations include: Eugene... Springfield... Corvallis...
Albany... ODell... Salem... McMinnville... Hillsboro...
Portland... Oregon City... Gresham... Vancouver... Battle
Ground... Washougal

* impacts: do not leave children and pets unattended in
automobiles.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

Take extra precautions if you work or spend time outside. When
possible... reschedule strenuous activities to early morning or
evening. Know the signs and symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat
stroke. Wear light weight and loose fitting clothing when
possible and drink plenty of water.

To reduce risk during outdoor work the occupational safety and
health administration recommends scheduling frequent rest breaks
in shaded or air conditioned environments. Anyone overcome by
heat should be moved to a cool and shaded location. Heat stroke
is an emergency... call 9 1 1.

evening for hot... dry... unstable conditions combined with
critically dry fuels for Oregon fire weather zones 602... 603...
604... 605... 606... 607... 608... and Washington fire weather zones
602... 604 and 660...

* affected zones... in Oregon... fire weather zones 602... 603...
604... 605... 606... 607 and 608. In Washington... fire weather
zones 602... 604 and 660.

* Affected areas... this includes the Gifford Pinchot National
Forest... Mt Hood National Forest west of the Cascade crest...
the Willamette National Forest... portions of the Siuslaw
National Forest... the Willamette Valley and adjacent
foothills... as well as the Clark County lowlands. Odf... blm...
and Washington dnr lands are included as well.

* Timing... through late this evening.

* Stability... mid and high level Haines 5 to 6 at
times... especially in the north half of the forecast area. Very
unstable conditions could promote column growth to 10 to 12
thousand feet msl or greater under intense burning conditions.

* Relative humidity... humidity values generally 12 to 22 percent
through early evening. Values slowly rising to 25 to 35 percent
by late evening in The Lowlands... but as low as 15 percent on
ridges.

* Wind... gusty afternoon and evening wind this afternoon through
late this evening. Sustained north to northwest wind 6 to 12 mph
with gusts to 20 mph expected for exposed areas.

* Impacts... the combination of an hot... dry... and unstable
environment... gusty winds... and extremely very dry fuels may
result in rapid growth of new or existing fires.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

A red flag warning means that critical fire weather conditions
are either occurring now... or will shortly. A combination of the
above conditions can contribute to extreme fire behavior.
