Weather Summary
Weather Underground midday recap for Sunday, May 26, 2013.

Unsettled weather developed in the nation's mid-section on Sunday, while severe storms became possible in the High Plains. Showers and thunderstorms developed from parts of the Northern Plains through the Mid-Mississippi Valley and into the western Ohio Valley during the morning and afternoon as low pressure from the West moved into the Central Plains and an associated warm front extended from the low through the Mid-Mississippi Valley and into the Southeast. Moisture from the Gulf of Mexico accompanied this warm front and supported convective activity from parts of the Northern Plains into the western Ohio Valley through the afternoon. Showers coupled with local runoff and possible heavy rains raised flood concerns in these areas, leading to Flood and Flash Flood Watches and Warnings issued for areas of southeastern South Dakota through central Iowa and into northwestern Illinois.

Meanwhile, increased instability over parts of the Northern High Plains into the Central Plains led to a slight risk of severe thunderstorm development from Sunday afternoon through Sunday night. While large hail was the primary severe weather threat for this region, a few tornadoes were still possible. A slight risk of severe weather was also possible in the Southern Plains, ahead of an associated dryline through the afternoon and evening. Damaging wind gusts and large hail were the primary hazards with these storms.

Elsewhere, a cold trough of low pressure remained over the Northeast on Sunday. This slow moving system supported more showers in the northern Northeast and led to below normal daytime highs. Persistent showers in the region led to Flood Advisories and Warnings from northern Maine through parts of northern Vermont. Out West, a trough of low pressure moved over the Pacific Northwest with scattered showers. Moisture from this system reached into parts of northern California and northern Nevada and kicked up a few light rain showers in the areas Sunday afternoon.

Flash Flood Warning
Alertas al Móvil y Correo Electrónico. Statement as of 9:44 PM CDT en Mayo 26, 2013

... Flash Flood Warning remains in effect for Knox County until 430 am
CDT Monday...

At 941 PM CDT... a Weather Service cooperative observer reported multiple
secondary roads across the northern and central portions of the County
were flooded. Another band of thunderstorms... with rainfall rates of 1
to 2 inches per hour... was pushing across the County and will continue to
produce a significant flash flood threat over the County through the evening
hours.

Runoff from this excessive rainfall will cause flash flooding to
occur. Some locations that will experience flash flooding include...
Galesburg... Abingdon... Altona... Gilson... Knoxville... Maquon...
Oneida... Rio... Victoria... Wataga... Williamsfield and Yates City.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

Be especially cautious at night when it is harder to recognize the
dangers of flooding. If flooding is observed... act quickly. Do not
enter the water. Turn around and move up to higher ground. Do not
stay in areas subject to flooding when water begins rising.

Flash Flood Watch
Alertas al Móvil y Correo Electrónico. Statement as of 8:18 PM CDT en Mayo 26, 2013

... Flash Flood Watch remains in effect through Monday evening...

The Flash Flood Watch continues for

* a portion of central Illinois... including the following
areas... Cass... Christian... Fulton... Knox... Logan... Macon...
Mason... Menard... Sangamon... Schuyler and Shelby.

* Through Monday evening

* heavy rainfall... 2 to 3 inches... have already fallen over the
watch area. More rainfall is expected through the Holiday
weekend. An additional 1 to 2 inches is anticipated... with
locally higher amounts possible.

* The ground across much of the area has been saturated with
several inches of rain over the past 24 hours. This will cause
the majority of additional rain to become runoff... causing
ditches to fill and water to cover low lying roads.
Underpasses and poor drainage areas may see flash flooding
develop... particularly in areas of scattered thunderstorms.
Some flooding is expected to develop on area rivers and
streams over the next few days.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

A Flash Flood Watch means that conditions may develop that lead
to flash flooding. Flash flooding is a very dangerous situation.

You should monitor later forecasts and be prepared to take action
should flash flood warnings be issued.
